Parador de Cangas de Onís
Set on the banks of the River Sella in the Picos de Europa, this parador occupies the former Benedictine Monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva, one of the oldest in Asturias and linked to the first kings of Asturias.. Dating back to the 8th century, it is a National Monument with over 1,200 years of history.

Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada
Located in the heart of the Camino de Santiago, the Parador de Santo Domino de la Calzada has been adapted from the old Pilgrims’ Hospital opposite the cathedral. The original building was erected by Santo Domingo in the 12th century to accommodate pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela.
Its style is regal and elegant, with majestic halls and a lobby filled with Gothic arches and wooden coffered ceilings.
The town’s historic quarter is brimming with treasures in the form of mansions, palaces and churches, such as San Francisco, which is right next door to the parador. It’s also a great starting point for the Rioja Alto Wine Route. Plus hiking, golf, and historic discoveries such the nearby towns of San Millán de la Cogolla, the birthplace of the Spanish language!

Solar eclipse weather reminder
It’s important to remember that you are never guaranteed to see an eclipse. It can be cloudy anywhere. So be sure that you are OK with that – make sure that you would still enjoy the vacation even if you did not see the eclipse! Use tools like the Time and Date website, which can give you the average cloud cover for any location at any time. The chance of cloud cover around Greenland and Iceland – and even the north coast of Spain – may be high.
Also, in Spain the eclipse will take place in the evening, so the sun will be low in the sky. On a boat around the Balearic Islands that shouldn’t be a problem, the horizon will be visible. For mainland Spain, we’d have to be aware of anything that might obscure the view. Having a rental car ready may be a worthy investment.
